My Musical Culture
![]() |
Hi everyone! My name is Tisha Kosmas and I am a junior, majoring in music education along with a performance certificate. My passion for music started when I picked up a violin for the first time at eleven years old. I didn't know what it meant to me at the time, but I definitely wasn't expecting the violin to become, what it would be, the rest of my life (I wanted to be a doctor at one point.. yeah too late for that).
I'll be the first to admit, I never had any musical experience until I got to middle school. I never had piano lessons, never been apart of a church choir, nor did I like singing as much as I do today (Crazy how life works). Thanks to my first encounter with the violin, I appreciate music much more than I ever did as child. Music has a way of making an impact on people and I'd like to take you on my musical journey!
An example of music that's important to me: 2019 was one of the darkest years I've lived. My mental state was at its downfall, I developed unhealthy habits, and I was unhappy almost all the time. I kept myself busy with school and work so that I didn't have to think about anything, but this eventually led to my biggest breakdown and honestly, I didn't think I was going to come up from it. I actually discovered this song in 2018 but it resonated with me much more in 2019 because it related to the events that were going on in my life. This song made me realize no matter is going on in my life, I need to take a step back and just breathe, everything will come together in time. Here is "Breathe" by Lee Hi!
An example of music that's helped me get through the pandemic: Before this pandemic started, I felt like I never had time for myself. It was always "Tisha it's time for class, Tisha you have to practice, Tisha it's time for bed." But when this pandemic came, I had no idea what to do because I was so used to being busy all the time. Well, I did all the things I was never able to do. I was able to watch Netflix more than I ever did (anime especially), I became invested on a Youtube series called "Buzzfeed Unsolved," and I developed a hobby of painting my nails! My music taste also did some exploring of its own and I started to have a liking for alternative music. I rarely listened to this type of genre but there's something about it that makes me feel like I'm in a movie when I'm driving down the road. I would post all of the new artists I discovered, but I'll post my favorite Bad Suns song from YouTube. Here is an acoustic version of "Daft Pretty Boys"

everything is gorgeous. Wow!💜💜
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteI can totally relate to your story about a song that is important to you. I too have experienced a dark period in my life where I found myself somewhat shutting down, and doing things to keep my mind off of what was bothering me. Like you, I soon encountered a song that I was able to relate too and pull me out.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that this is something you're able to relate to! Times of uncertainty are never easy to deal with on your own, especially at such a young age. I'm glad to hear you're doing better!
DeleteI love that you mentioned how the alternative music you started listening to made you feel like you're in a movie, driving down the road. Daft Pretty Boys is actually one of my favorite songs and that genre of music is my favorite for that specific reason. I listened to a lot of it during the pandemic because it's nice to feel that way.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started listening to Daft Pretty Boys, it gave me a nostalgic feeling that I haven't felt in years and that's pretty much the same feeling I get when I listen to alt music now. It's a good feeling to feel, especially during times like these. It allows you to let go and breathe a little.
DeleteI really love your blog! I can really relate to your story and experience with songs like Lee Hi's "Breathe". I remember when I first listened to it a few years ago too- it had the same feeling for me, to just let yourself step back, breathe and take life as it comes!
